San Marco tiene il centroSt Mark's holds the centre
Un solo spazio si chiama piazza. Basilica, campanile e palazzo lo tengono fermo. One space is allowed the name piazza. Basilica, campanile and palace hold it still.
Piazza San Marco is the only ground to which Venice grants the name piazza. Everything else is a campo or a campiello. It also sits lower than the rest of the city, and high water covers it first.
The basilica closes the far end. Gold mosaics over the portals, a geometric pavement that rises and settles with the centuries, the Pala d'Oro behind the high altar. The campanile is visible from half the city. It collapsed in July 1902, they rebuilt it as it was, and from 1912 it has stood again.

Palazzo Ducale, verso il moloPalazzo Ducale, toward the Molo
Palazzo Ducale looks at the water, not the square. Its Istrian stone facade faces the Molo. Inside come the Maggior Consiglio and Senate halls, the golden staircase and, on the far side, the Bridge of Sighs toward the New Prisons.

La Piazzetta sul bacinoThe Piazzetta on the basin
Between the palace and Sansovino's library, the Piazzetta opens onto the basin with the two columns, San Todaro and the lion of St Mark. It is the ceremonial entrance for anyone arriving by water, and the point where the gondolas line up along the Molo.
